Excerpts:
What was growing up like?
Well, it was okay. I grew up with my mum. My father is extremely rich and I met him when I was 19 years old.
So you were abandoned…
(Cuts in) No I wasn’t. I didn’t even feel anything. My mom played the role very well and I got everything I wanted. We basically had everything and I never lacked anything. It was later I got to know that my dad was rich.
The first time you met your dad after 19 years, how did you feel?
I didn’t feel anything. I didn’t feel he was absent because my mom played her role very well and it was beautiful. What I said was ‘finally I have met you and I’m happy.’ And that was it. We talk once in a while but I can’t stay or do without talking to my mom every day but I can stay a whole month without talking to dad and I’m not bothered. I think that’s because of how we started. However, I respect him and I love him too; I have my own kind of special love for him and appreciate him, but my mom is like my refuge.
So, like your mum, would you stick to one man once you’re married no matter what the man does?
No, that’s not an option. I can’t say that because of my own childhood experience I’ll stick to one man even when I’m not getting what is expected. My mom did a great job so I can do a great job too although I’m not hoping for that. However, I won’t say because I didn’t experience fatherly love I would die over a man. No, this is the 21st century and everything has changed. As far as I can feed my kids I’m okay.
How would you compare Nollywood and Gollywood?
The fact is that more movies are shot in Nigeria compared to Ghana. The normal movies shot in Ghana are what you call cinema movies here in Nigeria. Nollywood is the biggest in Africa and most Ghanaian actors want to cross over to Nigeria because once you are accepted here it would be much easier making it.
What challenges have you faced as an actress?
Well, I’ll say language barrier because I’m Ghanaian and I don’t understand the local languages and when I’m on set with my Nigerian colleagues, I don’t understand what they say but I’m trying my best to adapt. Aside that, I’m yet to face anything called challenge as regards my career. There are certain roles that I haven’t played yet and I’m looking forward to playing them.
What’s been your greatest moment as an actress?
Last year I won the Hottest Ghanaian Actress in Nollywood award and someone gave me a Lexus SUV as gift just like that. That singular act has inspired me to keep pushing.
What’s been your lowest moment?
I haven’t had a lowest moment but I’ve had some low moments. I’ve had cases of people criticizing me because of certain roles I’ve played. I was at the Ikeja Shopping Mall the other day when a group of guys walked by and I heard one of them say ‘no be that prostitute be that?’ I felt really bad. People always associate you with your role in a movie and forget that you have your own personal life.
What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done to you?
Wow! A fan once gave me like eighty something calls in just a day. He was sending me messages on facebook and twitter and telling me of how he dreamt of us having sex and all lots of crazy stuff. The guy kept stalking me, he wanted to know where I was and what I was doing and that was so uncomfortable and scary and because of that I had to change my number. I really pray and hope it ends that way.
Is there any ‘he’ in the picture right now?
Well, there’s none yet. I’m very single but not searching because for now, I want to concentrate on my career. This job is very demanding. Take for instance, I’ll be in Nigeria for 10 weeks shooting a movie, if I had a boyfriend he’ll be in Ghana painting different pictures in his head. How do you think that kind of relationship will last or grow?
Could you describe your ideal man?
You just have to be hardworking and comfortable and should be able to meet up with my standards. He has to be comfortable, mind you; the word is not rich but comfortable. He must be comfortable enough to take care of me. This is the 21st century and everything has changed. He has to be busy while I’m busy so he doesn’t think negatively.
If your man asks you to quit your job would you?
Hell! No, he can’t. My man should understand my job.
Can you act nude?
No I can’t! This is not Hollywood. African values and traditions are different from foreign values and traditions. When I travel for vacation and go swimming in my bikini and take pictures and upload, the kind of comments I get are quite funny not to talk of going totally nude. The highest I can do is show some cleavages here and there.
Where do you see yourself in the next couple of years?
Ella Mensah is going to be big; you guys should watch out for me! I’ve started a male clothing line called House of Ella, and I deal in contemporary native wears and I’m also doing female clothing which I wear myself.
