Surprises, spectacle at Music & Entertainment Gospel Awards (MEGA) 2014

The uncanny revolution for the awakening of the Nigerian music industry instituted by the organisers of Nigeria’s premier gospel awards, Music and Entertainment Gospel Awards (MEGA) was courageously taken to greater heights with the second edition of the pacesetting project which took place in Lagos on Friday November 14, 2014. The award night tagged the ‘MEGA Show’ by the Main Organising Committee (MOC), was held at the Haven Event Centre, Ikeja, GRA, Lagos with glitz, glamour and paparazzi. I command presidents, govs, first ladies –Ibadin, CEO, Mattson Creations Photography

“I don’t like talking about my childhood,” he tells you, fiddling with one of the several cameras on his table. They are of various sizes, makes and shapes. It is a Tuesday morning and it is raining torrentially. But that was not enough to stop him from coming to his studio, where two of his workers are already busy, attending to customers. For Matthew Ibadin, the athletic and fragile looking CEO of Mattson Creations Photography and Academy, the road of life has been a tortuous one. Growing up for him was everything but rosy. This is quite expected, having lost both his mother and father six months apart when he was barely six years old. “You know what that means?” he asks rhetorically, sadness welling up in his eyes as he recollects that grim part of his life’s trajectory. It was enough to break any child’s spirit. But not Mattson. The Uromi, Edo State-born photographer, or photo entrepreneur, as he is wont to describe himself has climbed the ladder of success. To

Federation Cup ’ll be Enyimbas’ next year –Kalu

It was yet another round of celebrations for former Abia state governor Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu as Enyimba lifted their fourth Federation’s Cup yesterday in Lagos. “You can always bank on Enyimba “, Kalu said excitedly, “with this successful Cup defence, I see them equaling Enugu Rangers’ 38-year-old record next year.” Rangers remain the only side to have won the trophy thrice consecutively. It began in 1974, when the Coal City Boys defeated Ismaila Mabo’s Mighty Jets of Jos 2-0 at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. They retained the cup in1975 with a lone goal victory over Sam Ojebode’s Shooting Stars of Ibadan. In 1976, the Flying Antelopes stopped Owura Agyei and the Alyufsalam Rocks of Ilorin 2-0. It was a thing of pride as the Ilorin side paraded about 10 Ghanaians including James Quino and Ahmed Nalando. The lone Nigerian, Humphrey Okechukwu was poached by Rangers at the end of the encounter. Kalu joked yesterday that he could put his cash on The Aba Elepha

Oshoala, Mbachu hand Rivers Angels fourth title

Rivers Angel silenced Sunshine Queens 2-0 to lift the 2014 Nigeria Women Federation Cup final played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium yesterday. Second half strikes from Asisat Oshoala and Stella Mbachu were all the Port Harcourt based outfit that stuffed their starting line up with about 95 percent of Super Falcons players needed to breeze past their opponents from Akure. Angels began the game on a bright note but had their chances thwarted by outstanding Sunshine Queens goalkeeper, Funke Okewole. Oshoala, Aminat Yaakubu and Stella Mbachu took their turns to miss goal scoring opportunities as they couldn’t get past Okewole. Edwin Okon’s ladies dominated the first twenty minutes of the encounter before Sunshine Queens made their first attacking move through Oyewusi Shola but her efforts was an easy catch for goalkeeper Ibuheleye Whyte. Aminat failed to get the curtain raiser for her side as her shot hit the woodwork following a well tailored cross from Oshoala

Party clears Yuguda for senate

Bauchi State Governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has been cleared to contest the Bauchi South Senatorial seat in the 2015 general elections. This followed the presentation of a certificate of clearance to the governor by the screening committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday. Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Deacon Ishola Adeyemi, in a statement, said the governor was issued the clearance certificate at the end of the screening of aspirants by the PDP in Bauchi at the weekend. The presentation of the clearance certificate has now put to rest, speculations that the governor will contest the senatorial seat in 2015 following calls by various PDP stakeholders from the seven local government areas of the state that make up the Bauchi South Senatorial District. Chairman of the screening panel, while presenting the certificate to the governor, said Yuguda met all the criteria set up by the party for its aspirants, pointing out that the committee wa

Getting health workers back to work

The ongoing industrial action by health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) is exacting a huge toll on the nation’s beleaguered health system as patients are being turned back in most Federal Government-owned health facilities across the country. Available reports since the strike started, last week, showed that patients at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, Lagos and the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos were amongst those who could not access treatment on account of the dispute between members of JOHESU and the Federal Ministry of Health. Only a few federal health institutions offered skeletal services for emergency cases, with the story virtually the same in all federal health institutions throughout the country. This industrial action has once again brought to the fore the instability of the nation’s health sector which has, in recent times, been buffeted by needless strikes. When nurses are not on strike, it will b

PDP’s waiver to Kalu: A miscellany

IT is unprecedented in the history of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Last week, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party granted one of its founding members/foundational financier and former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, (and three other stalwarts) especial waivers to return to the party and also contest next year’s Abia North senatorial election on its all-conquering platform in Dr. Kalu’s case. Before this epochal intervention, a few charlatanistic fellows in the Abia chapter of the party who are merely provincial secretariat operatives had since 2011 when Dr. Kalu re-defected to the party consistently fed the public with tissues of lies on the non-membership of Kalu in the party he co-founded when most of these local champions had not seen the day! The absurdity of it all was that virtually all the persecutors and Kalu-haters were people biting the hand that had fed them in their days of anonymity and political insignificance. K

Kalu’s timely PDP special waiver

I think things that are done properly should at any time be commended. And one of such commendable things now is the waiver the PDP national leadership announced in favour of former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu. First, while Kalu is quite deserving of the waiver, it is also a positive move by the party when the elections are coming closer and at a time the opposition is doing all it can to snatch any state or constituency it can from the ruling party. I must remind every member of the party in Abia that anyone that loves the party should be part of the duty to work for its progress to retain its leadership in the state. No gainsaying the fact that the reason the fortune of the party is in serious decline in the state is because the bullies that have seized power like a personal franchise in the state felt threatened by the presence of those that would correct them, even as they don’t feel a pinch of their conscience to chop off the hands that fed the

Alison-Madueke and oil sector transformation

‘ Knowing where you are going is the first step to getting there ’ – Ken Blanchard To many Nigerians, Diezani Alison Madueke’s name may not have been found in the list of Nigeria’s high-ranking political gladiators before assuming her present position as the nation’s Minister of Petroleum Resources about three years ago. But then, before delving into the usually turbulent political landscape of the country, Alison-Madueke had been globally acknowledged as one of Nigeria’s brightest brains whose career had been one of the most exciting, having had cause to sit with global corporate leaders in championing the cause of corporate governance at managerial and board levels, spanning over two decades. The appointment of the reticent and amiable young intellectual Amazon by President Goodluck Jonathan, therefore, could be seen as a well-deserved recognition by the government to infuse fresh minds into national political reengineering and the drive to reposition the country

As the Senate beckons on Stella Oduah

Those who know Princess Stella Oduah speak of her as a consummate workaholic, the one who sets her eyes on a project, pushes so hard and always gets the job done. The Goodluck Jonathan administration has made ‘transformation’ its signature tune, so as the administration talks about attaining goals in Vision 20: 2020 and infrastructure development, as has been the case in the last four years of the current administration, no one best exemplifies the transformation both as a political and developmental creed than this woman who took the Aviation sector of Nigeria from the doldrums and the backwaters it was relegated, to the heights of national and international recognition. It is no surprise therefore that as soon as this lady of enterprise left the office of Minister of Aviation few months back, her people of Anambra North pressed her to come forward and be their Senator. The reception organized for this Amazon by the entire Ogbaru people of Anambra North was quite

WAR IN IBADAN

Three days after thugs shot dead a Police Inspector at a political rally in Oke- Ado, Ibadan, another tragedy hit the Oyo State capital yesterday, as three persons were feared dead in another politically motivated fracas that engulfed Born Photo, Isale Osi, Popo and Idi-Arere communities, in Ibadan South-West Local Government. When Daily Sun visited the scene yesterday, the four communities resembled a war zone. Broken bottles littered the roads in the four communities. No fewer than 10 houses, 200 shops, several cars, comprising two articulated vehicles, one tricycle and eight motorcycles were burnt during the fracas. Also, the transformer at the Born Photo Junction was set ablaze. Apart from the 10 houses that were burnt, many other houses were vandalised. The invaders reportedly used guns, cutlasses, broken bottles and other dangerous weapons freely. It was gathered that many residents of the four communities had relocated to other areas of the city for safety. Daily Sun gathere

2 APC guber aspirants step down for Solomon

Two governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) coming out from the Ikorodu Division of Lagos State have voluntarily stepped down for an aspirant from the area, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, popularly called GOS. As a result, political and eminent leaders in Ikorodu Division have unanimously adopted Solomon as the APC consensus candidate for the Division. Those who stepped down from the race include Mr. Taiwo Akintunde Kara and a former Head of Service in the state, Prince Adeseye Ogunlewe. The decision to step down for Solomon to pave the way for his adoption as the Ikorodu Division consensus candidate was reached at a meeting held at the Ikorodu town hall on November 7 with representatives of the various coalition groups clamouring for ‘Ikorodu Division for Governor 2015,’ respectable elders of the community and the three APC aspirants namely- Ogunlewe, Kara and Solomon. A communiqué endorsed by the three aspirants da

Democracy under threat, Tukur alerts Nigerians

Former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur, has expressed concern over recent development in the country and warned political players not to derail democracy. Tukur in his reaction to the unfortunate meted out to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, last Thursday, by security operatives, admonished Nigerians entrusted with sensitive public positions to learn to first place national interest above every other consideration. The Ambassador-at-Large expressed regret that development in the last one week offered illumination that the country was drifting towards chaos. He further appealed to security operatives to always discharge their statutory assignments with wisdom and tact. Tukur said: “In the words of the Senate President, David Mark, people should not bring partisan politics into the journey we started so well, so far.” The former PDP chairman further called for probe of the incident at t

2015 guber: Ngilari commends PDP over clearance

Adamawa State Governor, Bala Ngilari, has lauded the courage of the PDP screening committee, which cleared him at the weekend in Bauchi State for the party governorship primary. Daily Sun checks revealed that the party national working committee had initially zoned the governorship to Adamawa Central, a pronouncement that technically shut out the incumbent governor from the race. But just like the Adamu Mu’azu-led national leadership of the party reversed itself at the weekend on the dissolution of the state chapter of the party, Governor Ngilari from Adamawa North Central was cleared ahead of the governorship primary. Reacting, the governor praised the party for allowing wise counsel to prevail and noted that his clearance for the race was a sign of confidence in his capacity to lead the party to victory in the 2015 general elections. He assured that the PDP in Adamawa State would go into the primaries and the general elections as a united family. The governor promised to co

My lovely eight-month old baby suddenly began having seizures few days ago. It was so severe that it worried me and her mum so much that we though it was a spiritual attack. She would suddenly stiffen her neck and shake with great energy (seemingly unconscious), and then return to normal mode in less than a minute. It happened like 3-5 times every 15minutes. Everytime it occurred, we felt like weeping as the ever lovely baby seemed to have been strangely hijacked. We rushed to the hospital and some blood tests were recommended.
