The Federal Government College Okigwe, Imo State, Old Students
Association (FEGOCOOKOSA) has raised the alarm over recent attacks on
the education sector in some parts of the North by insurgents.
The Lagos State chapter Chairman of the association, Omeoga Chukwu, raised the alarm while speaking on the preparation for the association’s national convention and lecture series in honour of the pioneer principal of the school, Dr.D.M Ukpe, themed, “Education: A Key Factor for Promoting Peace and Unity in Nigeria.” The event will hold on October 17 to 18 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island Lagos.
He said the essence of establishing Federal Government schools was not being achieved with the incessant attacks on the schools in the country. Chukwu, a lawyer pointed that the schools were established to foster peace and unity in the country after the civil war, they have become hunting grounds for Boko Haram insurgents in the North.
He also stated that the problems of the education sector had been worsened by the neglect of the government.
His words: “The role of education as the engine of social, political and economic advancement globally cannot be over emphasized. Over time education seems to be losing its potency as a factor in nation building and human development. This can be attributed to the leadership moving education further down on their priority list. “With the huge security challenge facing our nation and with reference to the recent callous massacre of young children at the Federal Government College in the North eastern part of Nigeria and the abduction of young schoolgirls in Chibok, FEGOCOOKOSA has decided to lend its voice to reiterate that an attack on education is an attack on the future of a balanced society. If young children are murdered in their sleep, wickedly abducted from schools, when their only “sin” was seeking sound education that will position them to be future leaders of our great nation, then we are fast losing our very sense of living.”
The speakers at the lecture cut across various spheres of life from the academia to the diplomatic corp as well as the private sector, they include Nze Charles Anyiam-Osigwe ,Prof Mba .O.Okoronkwo(OON)Deputy VC,National Open University of Nigeria and Special Adviser to the Presidency on Youth Empowerment,Ambassador Obinna Adim. The Nigerian High Commisioner of Ghana,Ambassador Ademola Onafowokan will chair the occasion.
